Although it’s giving most of our other apple trees a two-year head start, this espaliered specimen looks like being the only one to bear fruit this season. According to a 2003 Gardening Australia episiode, the Akane “is a Japanese variety of eating apple developed in 1937, having a taste of strawberry, with a slight chewy texture”. Our Akane is one of four apple trees which we have espaliered in our veggie garden.
